“Do you think he’ll call your bluff?” Zack said, chuckling.

“His father won’t dare,” Brian said. “He realizes there are too many others who would love to establish a presence on Pluto and he’ll do anything to keep that from happening.” He gave Zack a reassuring smile.

“Come on, I want to show you something,” Zack said.

  “What?”

Zack didn’t answer but smiled and Brian had no choice but to follow his direction. They put on their space suits and ventured outside.

Zack led Brian across the plain, with low mountains rising to one side, and nothing but dark blue sky to the other.

“Where are you taking me? Brian said after about thirty minutes. “Do you know the way back?”

“We’re almost there,” Zack answered. “I’ve only been here once or twice, but I know the way.”

The land rose and fell in easy rolling hills. At last Zack stopped at the top of a rise. In the distance, Brian saw a vast plain, no mountains or other features, stretching to the horizon in all directions. The landscape looked as smooth as a marble. Although he could not see anything for miles, it held a certain fascination. He felt insignificant but not frightened.

  “What is this place?

“This is the heart of Pluto, the huge shape which is the planet’s distinguishing mark,” Zack said. “Someday, we might try to cross it.”

“It’s so vast you can’t see the other side. It’s ginormous!”

“Just like your heart,” Zack said. He reached out with a gloved hand and clasped Brian’s. “It doesn’t matter how long we’re here, we’ll be next to Pluto’s heart and next to each other’s. Even if it’s for one Plutonian year.”

“Well, since we only have a year, we better not waste any more time.” Brian turned and pulled Zack in the direction they came.
